Perhaps no portion of the Bible is more widely recognized than the Ten Commandments. People throughout the world are familiar with them, yet they are often misunderstood. Many see them primarily as stern demands that must be obeyed to avoid God’s judgment. Others regard them as merely “Old Testament law,” applicable only to the people of Israel before the Messiah came.
But what are the Ten Commandments? Why did God give them to Moses? What do they reveal about His character and His desire for humanity? What blessings come from honoring the principles they contain, and are those principles still relevant today?
In the Hebrew Scriptures, they are called the “Ten Words,” an expression commonly translated as the “Ten Commandments.” Yet they are far more than a set of restrictions. God gave these words to a people He had already rescued from slavery, not as a means of earning their deliverance, but as instruction for living in the freedom He had given them. Understood within their historical and biblical context, they reveal God’s love for His people, His desire for a faithful relationship with them, and His wisdom for building a community in which people could flourish and live rightly with one another.
