In 21st-century life, it can feel increasingly difficult to find a reason for joy. Each day we are confronted with images of rebellion, strife, and turmoil around the world. From all appearances, the world seems to be racing toward self-destruction and ruin. Has there ever been a time like the present?
When we read Scripture, however, we quickly discover that this struggle is not new to humanity. The tension and conflict we see today have existed since Adam and Eve were expelled from God’s garden. Yet throughout every season of conflict, oppression, and uncertainty recorded in the Bible, God’s faithful people still experienced joy.
What was their “secret”? How did they live with joy in the midst of persecution? How could they rejoice while enslaved under oppressive empires?
